Borrowdale Parish Council are not meeting currently, and meetings won’t be convened again until Government Advice is given that it is safe to do so. Volunteering: If you would like to volunteer/offer support during this person you can registered via the Support Cumbria Website

NHS Volunteers- GoodSAM- This is an app which you can download from and you can sign up to support the NHS in one of 4 roles:

  • Community Response Volunteer (help with shopping, medicine, and essential supplies)
  • NHS Patient Transport Volunteer (transport home from hospital)
  • NHS Transport Volunteer (transport of equipment between NHS sites)
  • Check in and Chat Volunteer (short term telephone support to those at risk of loneliness)

Local Support: If you need any support/help or you just want a friendly phone call please call Freda Chapman on 017687 77295. She will then put you in touch with the closest volunteer to your locality.

Emergency help line for Vulnerable Persons: If you are a vulnerable person or a person over the age of 70 and you don’t have any local support from family or friends or local volunteers you can contact 0800 783 1966 a helpline set up by Cumbria County Council. Or if you you prefer you can use the email This will be open Monday – Friday 9am to 5pm and 10am to 2pm at weekends.

Shielding- The government is providing a weekly free food parcel as part of its ‘shielding’ strategy. If you have received a letter from the NHS informing them of the fact you are resident to be shielded the registering instructions were included on this letter. If you haven’t been able to register please call 0800 028 8327.  For anyone who has been advised to shield and NOT received your food parcel please contact 0800 028 8327 or email

Allerdale Area Local Resilience Group has been set up to support the work of the Cumbria Strategic Coordinating group. This group will lead coordination of different levels of community response and produce resources to support volunteers & local groups, and where necessary link these with statutory services. Village Halls are all now closed until Government Advice allows them to reopen.

Household Waste Recycling Centres- Now open, but people are encouraged to only attend if they have to.

Garden Waste collections – These will recommence from Mid May on a fortnightly rota.

Household & bulky collections- SUSPENDED

Concessionary Travel:  From 27th March 2020 older & disabled persons will be able to use their concessionary passes before 9:30am on weekdays for free travel in Cumbria. This will apply until the end of July 2020.

Highways Works: Cumbria County Council Highways are operating a reduced operation during Covid-19 due to staff being redeployed to the front line response. During this time emergency works are being carried out:

Potholes- Category 1- High risk as a priority and only then Category 2 defects- Medium Risk

Flooding & Winter works if required

Footway & cycleway defects

Street lighting defects

Verge & sign maintenance (if essential for safety)

Essential bridge repairs

Road Traffic Collisions.

MOT’s: Vehicle owners will be granted a 6 month exemption from MOT testing, enabling people to continue to travel to work and for essential purposes. All cars, vans and motorcycles which would usually require an MOT test will be exempt from needing a test from 30th March 2020. Drivers will be prosecuted if driving unsafe vehicles.
